iPhone / iPad - OpenVPN

Here you can find setup information for your chosen VPN and also how to fix any problems you might encounter.

You can use the Table of Contents on the right hand side of this window to navigate between the different sections.

Install Guide

Step 1
Retrieve your VPN username and VPN password from the 'My Services' section of the Client Area:

Please note, the below is a screenshot of the Client Area. Use the link above, to access the Client Area.

Step 2
Go to App Store

Step 3
Search for OpenVPN Connect and then install/download the app.

Be careful, there are a few that look similar!

Step 4
Open the below link in the Safari web browser, this contains our iOS OpenVPN configuration files:

Step 5
With the link in Step 4 open, you will see a list of configuration files, similar to the below screenshot.

You should select the location you want to appear to be in; UK for UK sites, USA for USA sites, etc.

Tap on an option name, to download that configuration file.

Which options should I use?!

  • Port 1 is labelled 'Performance', these are typically the fastest
  • Port 2 is abelled 'Fallback', these may be required from some restricted locations
  • We recommend you experiment, to see which works best for you.

Step 6
Tap Download, the selected configuration file will then download to your device.

Step 7
To access the downloaded configuration file, tap the downward pointing arrow shown in the address bar.

Step 8
After tapping the downward pointing arrow, a menu will appear.

Tap Downloads from this new menu

Step 9
Your downloads will then be shown.

Tap the SV - xx - Port x - xxxx configuration file that you downloaded above

Step 10
You now need to share the downloaded configuration file, to the OpenVPN App.

Tap the Sharing Icon, the square with an arrow

Step 11
A sharing menu will appear, from the bottom of the screen.

Tap OpenVPN - this will send the configuration file, to the OpenVPN App.

Step 12
Tap Allow - although it is not strictly necessary, to allow notifications

Step 13
Tap Agree

Step 14
The Import Profile screen will appear, within the OpenVPN App

Tap Add

Step 15
Enter your VPN username, retrieved in Step 1 at the top of this guide, usually your email address.

Then, tap Add

Step 16
Tap Allow

Step 17
Your device will now prompt you to authorise the VPN configuration install.

If your device has TouchID or FaceID, you can use this.

Otherwise, you will be prompted for your numerical unlock code, the same code you use to unlock your device.

Step 18
At the time of writing, 01/10/21, there is a bug in OpenVPN. This only happens for the first configuration file that you import, i.e a brand new setup.

You may see the VPN configuration you are attempting to import, is shown twice as shown in the screenshot below. The workaround, is to exit and re-open the OpenVPN App.

If you see this, exit back to the main screen on your device - either pressing the button on the front, or swiping up from the bottom of the screen.

Step 19
Start the OpenVPN app again

Step 20
Now, you should just see 1 configuration file - not the duplicates.

Tap the pencil icon on the far right-hand side.

Step 21
Configure as follows, then tap Save top right

  • User name: Usually your email address, retrieved in Step 1 of this guide
  • Save password: Enabled
  • Password: Your VPN password, retrieved in Step 1 of this guide

Step 22
Move the VPN slider to the On position

Tap Yes if prompted to enable the VPN connection.

Step 23
When using OpenVPN, you must only use the OpenVPN App to connect and disconnect the VPN.

It is not possible to connect/disconnect the VPN from the main iOS VPN Settings, there is a note on that screen:
