Windows - OpenVPN DPI


Here you can find setup information for your chosen VPN and also how to fix any problems you might encounter.

You can use the Table of Contents on the right hand side of this window to navigate between the different sections.

This setup guide is for OpenVPN DPI, which is sometimes needed from some censored or restricted locations - to bypass VPN filtering/blocking.



Install Guide



Step 1
Retrieve your VPN username and VPN password from the 'My Services' section of the Client Area:


Please note, the below is a screenshot of the Client Area. Use the link above, to access the Client Area.




Step 2
Open the below link in your web browser, this contains our Windows OpenVPN configuration files:




Step 3
With the link in Step 2 open, you will see a list of configuration files, similar to the below screenshot.

You should select the location you want to appear to be in; UK for UK sites, USA for USA sites, etc.

Click on an option name, to download that configuration file.


Which options should I use?!

  • Port 1, 2 are labelled 'Performance', these are typically the fastest
  • Port 3, 4 are labelled 'Fallback', these may be required from some restricted locations
  • We recommend you experiment, to see which works best for you.




Step 4
Next, you need to install OpenVPN. OpenVPN is the software that will be used to connect to our service.

Download the OpenVPN Installer, using the link below:




Step 5
Run the OpenVPN DPI Installer, downloaded in Step 4 above, click Yes




Step 6
Click Next




Step 7
Click Install, we recommend you do not modify the default location




Step 8
Click Next, you do not need to make any changes to the default selection




Step 9
When the screen shows Installation Complete, at the top, click Next




Step 10
Click Finish




Step 11
Start OpenVPN GUI, by double-clicking on the icon on your desktop




Step 12
You now need to install the OpenVPN Configuration Files, that you downloaded in 'Step 2' and 'Step 3'. Click OK




Step 13
Locate the OpenVPN icon, in the System Tray bottom right-hand corner, right-click on the OpenVPN icon.

Start 'OpenVPN GUI', using the icon on your desktop, if you do not see this icon.




Step 14
Click Import file…




Step 15
Navigate to your Downloads folder, then Import the ovpn file that you downloaded in 'Step 2' and 'Step 3'.

Step 16
Locate the OpenVPN icon, in the System Tray bottom right-hand corner, right-click on the OpenVPN icon.




Step 17
If you only imported 1 OpenVPN Configuration File, click Connect.

If you imported multiple OpenVPN Configuration Files, select the option, then click Connect.




Step 18
Enter your VPN Username and VPN Password that you retrieved in 'Step 1', enable Save Password, click OK



To try another connection, first disconnect any that are already connected.


Step 19
To Disconnect:

Locate the OpenVPN icon, in the System Tray bottom right-hand corner, then right-click on the OpenVPN icon, click Disconnect

If you have multiple OpenVPN configuration files, select the option you're connect to, it will have a tick by it, then click Disconnect.





Fixing Problems

Wrong Credentials


Possible causes:

  • Wrong username/password, this is the most common, please see the steps below
  • Your account is suspended/expired
  • You have too many devices concurrently connected for your account
  • You do not have access to this server with your account



Step 1
Retrieve your VPN username and VPN password from the 'My Services' section of the Client Area:

Step 2
Enter your VPN Username and VPN Password that you retrieved in 'Step 1', enable Save Password, click OK



To try another connection, first disconnect any that are already connected.


OpenVPNServiceInteractive is not started



Step 1
Restarting your computer usually resolves this issue, the required service will be started again after a restart.


Step 2
If a restart of your computer did not fix the problem:

Please reinstall OpenVPN (accepting the defaults) over the top of the current version. Download the OpenVPN Installer, using the link below, then re-run the installer.

If restarting your computer and reinstalling OpenVPN did not resolve the problem, please see:

Blocking DNS Failed



Step 1
Restarting your computer usually resolves this issue.


Step 2
If a restart of your computer did not fix the problem:

Please reinstall OpenVPN (accepting the defaults) over the top of the current version. Download the OpenVPN Installer, using the link below, then re-run the installer.

If restarting your computer and reinstalling OpenVPN did not resolve the problem, please see:

Step 1
If restarting your computer and reinstalling OpenVPN did not resolve the problem, you will need to manually check the OpenVPN services.

In the search box, bottom left, search for services.msc




Step 2
Click on the Services App that is found from the search:




Step 3
Find the OpenVPN Interactive Service from the list, right-click on this option, then choose Properties




Step 4
Make sure the Startup Type is set to Automatic (NOT Automatic Delayed).

If you had to change the Startup Type, click Apply at the bottom of the window.




Step 5
If the Service status is showing as Stopped, click Start.

If the Service status is showing as Running, click Stop, wait for it to stop, then click Start




Step 6
Click OK and close the Services window. Then try and connect OpenVPN again as normal.

Step 1

Click Import file…




Step 5
Navigate to your Downloads folder, then Import the new ovpn file that you downloaded.




Step 6
Locate the OpenVPN icon, in the System Tray bottom right-hand corner, right-click on the OpenVPN icon.



Already connected? Disconnect before trying to connect a different option.


Step 7
Select the new option that you imported, then click Connect.




Step 8
Enter your VPN Username and VPN Password (see 'Step 1' at the top of this page if needed), enable Save Password, click OK




Step 9
To Disconnect:

Locate the OpenVPN icon, in the System Tray bottom right-hand corner, then right-click on the OpenVPN icon, click Disconnect

If you have multiple OpenVPN configuration files, select the option you're connect to, it will have a tick by it, then click Disconnect.
