SmartStream

Introduction

SmartStream provides an alternative way to optimise streaming media, it offers unparalleled streaming performance even enabling HD content to be streamed effortlessly.

The list of SmartStream supported sites can be found below, please ensure the site you wish to use is on this list - otherwise, please use the appropriate VPN option instead.

SmartStream Supported Site List

SmartStream will generally not work in countries or locations where the Internet traffic is filtered, such as China, etc, nor when you are connecting via a public or shared Wi-Fi or Internet connection, such as in hotels, airports, etc. In such cases please use the VPN service instead.

Problematic ISP List

Please find a list of incompatible Internet Service Providers (ISPs) below, due to the level of filtering these ISPs perform it degrades or breaks SmartStream in some way. If you are using one of the below, you may have to use the VPN instead.

  • Any mobile/radio/satellite connection
  • Any public Wi-Fi/hotel/shared connection
  • Any ISP/connection that uses CGNAT (Carrier Grade NAT)
  • SingTel - Singapore
  • StarHub Cable Vision - Singapore (May work if you disabled SafeSurf)
  • China
  • Emirates Telecommunications Corporation – UAE (sites/devices that stream over HTTPS, which is probably most, should work. Those that stream over HTTP will be broken.)
  • Telkom SA Limited – South Africa
  • True ISP - Thailand (Issues vary, ISP filters selectively)
  • Vodafone - New Zealand (Only if you have a dynamic IP, static IP is fine)
  • TelstraClear - New Zealand
  • Vodafone Italy - Ask Vodafone if 'Secure DNS' is enabled, if so how/can you disable
  • Vodafone Spain - Ask Vodafone if 'Secure DNS' is enabled, if so how/can you disable. Also click here to see this page for further details on their blocking
  • Go - Malta (DNS hijacking. Fixable if you have a DD-WRT router, contact us if you do)
  • Globe - Philippines (Transparent proxy by default, customer advises you need to get a static IP to bypass)

Fixing Problems

Never Functioned

Open the below website on your SmartStream configured device to ensure that a) it has been configured correctly and b) is compatible with your router or Internet connection

If the above test fails check the below:

  • That your ISP/location is not on our Problematic ISP List
  • You do not have a VPN or proxy currently connected/active
  • If configuring a computer make sure you have configured the correct network adapter, for example if you are connected to the Internet over Wi-Fi make sure it is the wireless network adapter that you configured not the cabled adapter
  • Double check that the SmartStream DNS server IP addresses you entered do not have any mistakes, typing mistakes will generally cause you to lose all Internet access

Has Previously Functioned

Open the below website on your SmartStream configured device to ensure that a) it is still configured correctly and b) is compatible with your router or Internet connection

If the above test passes you likely need to sign into SmartStream with your VPN username/password to update your IP address in our system, each time your broadband IP address changes you need to complete the below.

MICRSOFT EDGE USERS PLEASE READ

There seems to be a bug in the Microsoft Edge browser, the default Windows 10 browser, where it does not ask for your username/password and immediately fails to log in.

For a quick-fix, please sign-in using Google Chrome, Firefox or Internet Explorer instead.

How to sign in with Internet Explorer

Work arounds for the Edge bug
The bug presents itself when you try to follow a link, such as https://smartstream.streamvia.com, from a website. Edge does not show the username/password box, but immediately tries to login without a username/password and so fails.

Options to work around it and continue signing in with Edge:

  • Manually type in the SmartStream address, into the address bar. It will then show the username/password request box.
  • Save the SmartStream link, to your Edge favourites/bookmarks. (star icon) Then, load it from the bookmarks (star icon with horizontal lines). When loaded from favourites/bookmarks, Edge will prompt for a username/password correctly.
