Windows - OpenVPN


Here you can find setup information for your chosen VPN and also how to fix any problems you might encounter.

You can use the Table of Contents on the right hand side of this window to navigate between the different sections.

You must have a Residential VPN account to use this service.


Install Guide


Step 1
Retrieve your VPN username, VPN password and OpenVPN Configuration Files from the 'My Services' section of the Client Area:

Step 2
Download the OpenVPN Installer, for Windows 10 and later, using the link below.


Running Windows 7? Please use this version


Step 3
Run the OpenVPN Installer, click Install Now




Step 4
Click Yes




Step 5
Click Close




Step 6
We now need to install the OpenVPN Configuration Files, that you downloaded in 'Step 1'. Click OK




Step 7
Locate the OpenVPN icon, in the System Tray bottom right-hand corner, right-click on the OpenVPN icon.

Start OpenVPN GUI, if you do not see this icon.




Step 8
Click Import file…




Step 9
Import the ovpn files that you downloaded in 'Step 1', you may need to extract the zip file first.

Which options should I use?!

  • Port 1, 2, 3 are labelled 'Performance', these are typically the fastest
  • Port 4, 5, 6 are labelled 'Fallback', these may be required from some restricted locations
  • We recommend you experiment, to see which works best for you.




Step 10
Locate the OpenVPN icon, in the System Tray bottom right-hand corner, right-click on the OpenVPN icon.




Step 11
If you only imported 1 OpenVPN Configuration File, click Connect.

If you imported multiple OpenVPN Configuration Files, select the option, then click Connect.




Step 12
Enter your VPN Username and VPN Password that you retrieved in 'Step 1', enable Save Password, click OK



To try another connection, first disconnect any that are already connected.




Fixing Problems

Wrong Credentials


Possible causes:

  • Wrong username/password, this is the most common, please see the steps below
  • Your account is suspended/expired
  • You have too many devices concurrently connected for your account
  • You do not have access to this server with your account



Step 1
Retrieve your VPN username and VPN password from the 'My Services' section of the Client Area:

Step 2
Enter your VPN Username and VPN Password that you retrieved in 'Step 1', enable Save Password, click OK



To try another connection, first disconnect any that are already connected.


OpenVPNServiceInteractive is not started



Step 1
Restarting your computer usually resolves this issue, the required service will be started again after a restart.


Step 2
If a restart of your computer did not fix the problem:

Please reinstall OpenVPN (accepting the defaults) over the top of the current version. Download the OpenVPN Installer, using the link below, then re-run the installer.

If restarting your computer and reinstalling OpenVPN did not resolve the problem, please see:

Blocking DNS Failed



Step 1
Restarting your computer usually resolves this issue.


Step 2
If a restart of your computer did not fix the problem:

Please reinstall OpenVPN (accepting the defaults) over the top of the current version. Download the OpenVPN Installer, using the link below, then re-run the installer.

Step 1
If restarting your computer and reinstalling OpenVPN did not resolve the problem, you will need to manually check the OpenVPN services.

In the search box, bottom left, search for services.msc




Step 2
Click on the Services App that is found from the search:




Step 3
Find the OpenVPN Interactive Service from the list, right-click on this option, then choose Properties




Step 4
Make sure the Startup Type is set to Automatic (NOT Automatic Delayed).

If you had to change the Startup Type, click Apply at the bottom of the window.
